Indigenous identity is fundamental in understanding American identity and nationhood. We live on indigenous land. Before colonization of America there were 500 different languages spoken and currently there are only 80 languages spoken and they are slowing dying out. Destruction of native land and identity is something that students might not be aware of, however; as educators is our responsibility to acknowledge.
In my class I consciously make an effort to give voice to indigenous writers who incorporate themes of justice, Mother Nature, honor, land as sustenances and community.
